What are Biosolids?
Biosolids are nutrient-rich organic materials resulting from the treatment of domestic sewage in a wastewater treatment facility (i.e., treated sewage sludge). Biosolids are a beneficial resource, containing essential plant nutrients and organic matter, and are recycled as a fertilizer and soil amendment.
Disposal at the NCF provides participants a reliable solution for disposal of biosolids that is cost-effective and environmentally friendly. NCF personnel provide convenient pickup and transportation service to participants.
The use of biosolids in the composting process truly completes the recycling process. An estimated 170,000 tons of biosolid and wood waste material have been kept from entering local landfills over the past 20 years. In addition to preserving landfill space, this allows our facility to provide the general public with a useful line of compost and mulch products.
Neches Compost Facility Participants
A coalition of member cities, with a strong desire to protect the environment, is the foundation of the facility’s success. The Authority owns the Neches Compost Facility and all equipment, with participants funding the operation and maintenance of the facility through monthly payments based on their pro rata share of biosolids contribution.
The NCF offers numerous benefits to its participants. These benefits include guaranteed biosolid disposal, the potential for wood waste disposal, allows the participants to meet all current regulatory requirements for municipal biosolid disposal (and avoid future regulatory burdens), offers a level of cost control, revenue from non-participant disposal, and rebates from compost sales revenue.
Representatives from each Participant make up the Management Committee, which meets three times annually to receive updates and make decisions regarding the Facility.
NCF would like to thank our participants for their long-standing and continued support of our facility, and commitment to environmental excellence.
